Power and intrigue seems deep in the psyche of those who crave power. Yes, William didn't hang about - appointing his own men to powerful positions and subjugating (sometimes with extreme violence) the populous. The Norman influence can still be seen in the land owning of today although the English language while influenced by the Norman overlords has not lost all its Germanic roots. And of course in northeast England the dialect can be traced still to the Angles
I think you had to be to survive in such times, Daniel. I guess we’d call it street craft these days. You don't really need stories such as Game of Thrones for excitement, just read up on English history from around the year 400 when the Romans abandoned the Britons to there own devices. Anything George RR Martin could dream up, the Angles, Saxons, Normans, Plantagenets and Tudors etc got there first…. from red hot pokers where you don't want one, to vats of Malmsey. They were an unforgiving and inventive lot back then when it comes to murder and mayhem…
Yep, mind you I suspect there are a few head's of state that might still like to indulge in such nefarious practices if they could get away with it and probably one or two who actually do. Mr Putin certainly dabbles in the "Will no one rid me of this troublesome priest?" famously associated with King Henry II of England
I could name yet ANOTHER overgrown BRAT but this isn't the time nor the place, BUT I'm sick of seeing the TWIT'S toadlike face in my newsfeed. I PRAY for a bout of hysterical blindness !
Thank you for another fascinating read, Harry.
Thanks Andrew
A fascinating account. The hunger for power and intrigue still go on today.
It’s amazing how quickly the Normans exercised their power across England.

& some people are naive enough to think that those were simpler times.
They certainly built to IMPRESS & / OR INTIMIDATE !
Indeed Daniel and both, although the intimidation part took a bit longer to work in the wild northeast of England compared to the rest of the country.
Flambard seems a bit of a rogue. I think that I'd have liked him.....

& People think that Roman emperors like the Caesars or other nobility such as the Borgias were a nasty lot.....
