I'll be the baker who confirms that your mother was absolutely correct - cool hands make better pastry. The last thing you want is the butter to melt under your warm hands.

Thanks Jodi - I confess it's 'shop-bought' pastry for me these days. I cook every day but at my age life's too short to make pastry....

Thanks Peter, sadly the Blaydon Post Office is long gone and my nearest is now up Shibdon Bank in Winlaton. I live just off the bank beside the cemetery so it's a hill climb if I have to post a parcel or visit my local pub.

Ah, a stottie with ham and pease pudding is a glorious thing. Every trip up to Newcastle to see my Mam always has us coming away with a couple of stotties. Not that they last long.

I'll have to give the recipe a go!
