That’s quite a tally of listed buildings Grainger designed. Although I have a penchant for brutalist and the utopian vision that drove their construction, I’m not sure this deliberate demolition of older Newcastle was such a good idea.
Fortunately the bribery scandal stopped it before it went any further - still lost a quarter of Grainger's vision though, but we did get a motorway slap bang through the city as 'compensation'!!!
Fascinating, Harry. Thank goodness not all of Grainger’s work was replaced. I really enjoyed this very informative stroll around Newcastle. I love the Theatre Royal.
Thanks Maureen and my photos don't really do him justice. I'm back to the TR next month (I saw my first live theatre there over 50 years ago - Macbeth by the youth RSC (I was doing the play for O Levels)) to see a local production 'Gerry and Sewell' about two local lads endeavouring to get a NUFC season ticket. A feeling with which I identify!
thank you for the tour and the history. and man, that poem at the end. those are some powerful words!
Thanks Megan
